Half-day trip:
From Ailikas and Annivaara in Utsjoki, you can find loop trails suitable for half-day trips. The climb up Ailikas is long and demanding, but higher up on the fell, the terrain is flatter. On Ailikas, you will experience a true wilderness atmosphere and face the same challenges as deeper in the backcountry – stream crossings, rocky terrain, and muddy spots.
Mainly, however, the trails are excellent mountain biking terrain and are great for trips lasting a few hours. For example, you can visit the Skalluvaara reindeer roundup fence or even the Vaisjoki wilderness hut and the Vetsijoki waterfall – there are plenty of options! In addition, Ailikkas offers magnificent views of the Teno and Utsjoki river valleys.
One-day trip:
An excellent day trip destination is the Njuohkarjärvi reindeer village, which is just under 20 km away in each direction. Part of the route requires traveling the same way back, but the wilderness feel of the area makes an impression.
Njuohkarjärvi used to have a reindeer roundup site, but nowadays the cottage village has only occasional visitors. The area's magnificent fell ranges and clear-water lakes are worth experiencing.
Two-day trip:
The Kaldoaivi trail offers enough riding for two days. You can start the trail from either Mieraslompolo or Lake Pulmankijärvi. The length of the trail is approximately 67 km. The route runs through magnificent scenery across the namesake fells of Finland's largest wilderness area, Kaldoaivi.
If you wish, you can deviate from the route to see the wreck of a Junkers airplane and Adolf's cabin, for example. The route offers challenges even for more experienced mountain bikers.
